The STBBI Program requires a self-directed and enthusiastic individual to work within a collaborative team environment to deliver services in accordance with the Ontario Public Health Standards – Sexual Health and Sexually Transmitted/Blood-Borne Infections (STBBI) Prevention and Control Protocol, 2019.

Responsibilities
  • Investigate reports and complete case and contact management of sexually transmitted and blood borne infections
  • Work in a fast paced, multi-disciplinary, sexual health clinic setting using critical thinking and exceptional teamwork to deliver excellent, inclusive customer service
  • Provide counselling and education on health promotion, disease prevention and public health interventions including STBBI prevention, birth control and pregnancy options, sexuality, immunization and harm reduction
  • Interventions practicing under the authority of medical directives such as performing venipuncture and specimen collection for STI testing, provision and dispensing of medication for birth control, Plan B emergency contraception and STI treatment including injections
  • Collaborate with team members, demonstrate flexibility, adaptability, problem solving, effective communication and continuous quality improvement
  • Work collaboratively with other health professionals and agencies to facilitate counselling and appropriate treatment for sexually transmitted infections
  • Work competently and compassionately with individuals who may be vulnerable or marginalized including youth, 2SLGBTQI+ communities, homelessness, racialized individuals, Indigenous peoples, people with lived experience with substances, sex workers, or survivors of human trafficking
  • Documentation and data entry in electronic medical records and SharePoint, and reporting to MOHLTC through iPHIS
What you will do in this role
  • Apply knowledge of population health status, health inequities, determinants of health, and strategies for health protection and promotion to guide practice
  • Apply public health and nursing sciences to practice using diverse theories, models and frameworks
  • Provide health information, teaching and counselling to individuals, groups, families and communities
  • Use a holistic approach to assess health status and consider determinants of health
  • Recognize patterns and trends in epidemiological data and service delivery
  • Identify and analyze how culture, attitudes, beliefs and feelings influence health behaviours and interventions
  • Establish mutually determined goals with clients, including outcome indicators and evaluative measures
  • Support clients to identify health risks and make informed choices about protective, preventive and health-promoting measures
  • Facilitate client engagement in identifying and defining health issues using community development and assessment skills
  • Participate in planning, development, implementation and evaluation of community-wide and site-specific public health strategies using an Evidence Informed Decision-Making process
  • Advocate for and contribute to healthy public policy
  • Collaborate with partners to identify and address public health issues and service gaps
  • Develop, foster and facilitate intersectoral partnerships and networks
  • Act as a change agent to impact determinants of health and improve health outcomes
  • Engage clients to identify assets, strengths and resources to address health inequities
  • Promote equitable access to health services and collaborate with communities on social justice issues
  • Demonstrate commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Communicate clearly using non-stigmatizing, equitable and inclusive language
  • Navigate challenging interactions with empathy, active listening and conflict resolution
  • Communicate knowledgeably about Peel Region services and public health programs
  • Utilize tools to reduce barriers to communication
  • Mentor and orient students, new staff and colleagues
  • Participate in workgroups, research and quality assurance initiatives
  • Build capacity by sharing knowledge and experience
  • Support change management and workplace culture initiatives
  • Engage in reflective practice and self-directed learning

  • Demonstrate professionalism in multiple practice settings
  • Adhere to public health and nursing ethical standards
  • Fulfill legal and professional obligations under relevant legislation and policies
  • Act as an ambassador for The Region of Peel, Public Health Services and Public Health Nursing
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support organizational goals
  • Participate in emergency preparedness, planning and training as required
  • Respond to public health emergencies and significant events as required
What the role requires
  • Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing or equivalent as recognized by a Canadian University
  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse by the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Previous nursing experience, or public / community health nursing experience, or public health placement as part of a BScN degree
  • Current CPR (BLS) certification
Preferred Divisional Specific Experience & Skills
  • 1 year of program-specific case management or 2-3 years of other communicable disease case management experience
  • Clinical nursing experience in acute care or community settings
  • Experience working with marginalized communities and knowledge of health impacts on these populations
  • Tuberculosis screening and N-95 mask fit testing may be required in certain program areas

Work Mode & Location

Location: 7120 Hurontario Street, Mississauga. Ability to work remotely. Some positions may require travel within Peel Region for home visits, clinics and partners.

Hours of work: Monday to Friday 8:30 AM - 8:30 PM; availability as per the Collective Agreement
